little bird

with the onset of cold weather and even snow, nothing makes me feel cozier than wrapping up in a blanket, drinking my favorite chamomile tea, and lighting some candles. i like my candles to smell good without being overpowering and to cast a soothing glow around the room. this candle, in particular, is one of my favorites because not only is it in the shape of a little bird, the birdcage lantern creates the prettiest shadows against my wall. i just thought I’d share it with you because it makes me smile!

birthday brownies

Yesterday was my roommate’s 22nd birthday, and as per her request, I baked up a batch of homemade brownies. Brownies can be tricky to make from scratch, especially since I feel like most people’s taste buds have been trained by Duncan Hines brownies-in-a-box, and homemade brownies are pretty different. It’s hard to achieve the right balance between cakey and fudgey, so I searched for a good recipe for a while…until a coworker recommended I try the Moosewood Cookbook brownies.

These were super easy to make…only six ingredients: 2 sticks of butter, 5oz. bittersweet chocolate, 1 3/4 Cup light brown sugar, 5 eggs, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, and 1 Cup flour!

While they weren’t quite as gooey as I’d prefer, they did have a nice soft texture and subtle sweet flavor (thanks to all the eggs and brown sugar). If you want a brownie that isn’t too dense or overly sugary, these are for you. Thanks to 101 Cookbooks, you can Find the recipe here. Happy baking!

tuesday tunes (on wednesday)

It’s during weeks like this one that I especially need a good playlist to keep my chin up. The weather is increasingly dreary and cold, exams are quickly approaching, and I’ve caught myself daydreaming about a perfect world in which we could all fast forward to Christmas and then straight to summer more times than I care to admit. I wanted to share this playlist yesterday for alliteration’s sake (“tuesday tunes”), but couldn’t find a good way to embed it into the post. If anyone has suggestions, let me know! Otherwise, I’ve just linked to my Grooveshark playlist HERE. “Tuesday tunes” is mixtape proof of my very eclectic musical taste….from Elton and Annie Lennox for your inner gay diva, to Otis and Stevie who satisfy the soul….I hope it gets you through whatever you need gettin’ through!

Happy listening!
